Effective Teaching Strategies and Resources
Below is a short break down of some strategies and accommodations a teacher needs to consider when teaching a child with RLD.
Child
The child may difficulty understanding conversations and specific societal situations. Get to know the child's interests and strengths |
Teacher
Teach specific social skills such as reading body language, and expressions Use role playing, social scripts and and storytelling Routines and visuals give the child cues to transition to other activities |
Parents
Work with parents to prepare child for changes and transitions. ex Grade levels, and different schools Ask parents what strategies they use at home and integrate them into your classroom. |
Administration
Have clear communication with relevant staff members about students communication skills and strategies Collaborate with school/Jurisdiction team to identify effective assessments, consultations, and supports. |
Other Students
A buddy system can be set up to help the child succeed in social situations. |
Academic Considerations
Multi Sensory Approach
- Use visual and written information as much as possible to support oral instruction.
- Use gestures to reinforce oral instruction, such as touching ear to listen
- Give students cues to change from one activity to another or when to listen
- Slow down and repeat yourself when instructing students with RLD
- Give student extra response time. Ten to Fifteen seconds longer than peers.
- Use clear concise instructions and emphasize on important parts of sentences.
- Have student repeat instructions before starting a task
- Student can use different colored manipulates to signal level of understanding. Ex. different colored cups.
- Have student re sequence instructions on board with magnets.
- Break down tasks and assignments into simple and manageable steps.
- Have reminders broken down on desk/board to help prompt student
- Have a quite working area for student
- Keep the classroom as calm as possible

- Set up a buddy system where a fellow peer/s are paired up with the child to ensure social success
- Have student involved in structured activities during lunch/recess.
- Role playing games that mimic realistic social situations can be played to help student gain confidence.
- Teaching students about appropriate social scripts can help with communication. ex. Greeting people, asking for clarification, asking/answering a question, how to read body language.
